Generic Batteries

Is it safe to use the generic Li-Ion batteries for smart phones? If it is Li-Ion will it explode or will the firmware on the battery prevent it from exploding? I don't mind if the battery dies within a month, as long as it doesn't explode upon heavy draining. If there is a chance of it exploding, is there a way that I can test it out before putting it into my phone? Example is leaving it in the charger for long excessive periods. I'm am thinking about buying a extra battery for the Galaxy i9000. The reviews to the battery seem to be ok but you never know.

FWIW, I bought a couple of spare batteries for my phone (used) on eBay. They seem ot have worked perfectly fine, been using them for several months, in a round-robin swap out, and no ill effects here at all.

I am not sure about 3rd party batteries, but I *can* say that a lot of fake / bogus / sub-par stuff has been sold online recently, particularly fake 32 GB MicroSDHCs and other stuff - so be careful what you buy and where you buy it *AND* who you buy it from.

Hmm ok. I don't mind having a bad quality battery so long as it doesn't blow up lol. The batteries online such as ebay are around $4 shipped (

example here). It's not expensive at all but I mean again, don't want it to ruin my $500 phone. Did you say you bought used batteries off ebay? Aren't the battery life on those horrible? Are they used OEM or used generic ones?

Sorry, wasn't eBay, went back and looked - was Amazon.

I got 2 batteries and a battery charger all for under $20, IIRC...

Hmmmm... Ebay and this battery comes from Shenzhen, China. I certainly wouldn't trust it in an expensive phone.

Anyway don't some phone manufacturers take steps to prevent these generic third-party batteries from been used their devices? e.g. chips in the battery. In a similar way that printer manufacturers are using chipped ink cartridges, to prevent the use of cheaper third-party ink cartridges.

I bought 2 extra batteries and a wall charger from Amazon. They charge ok, don't seem to hurt phone but the life isn't near what I have on the original. Works when camping though to have a charged battery at night so kids can reach me--otherwise phone has to be in truck to charge. (Camping w/ horses = no electric sites)
