Install an ad blocker from the play store, such as Adguard ..

Have a look at the FREE NoRoot Firewall app in the playstore.

It allows YOU to control which apps use Wifi and / or data...

Yes. After the initial install, when an app attempts to use data or wifi, a notification will appear to allow you to accept or deny the access. You can also allow / deny accesses on a URL or IP address basis for each app.

A great little app which I use the hell out of...

It's more frustrating to the developers when they don't get compensated for their hard work...

If you don't like the ads, don't use the app. Simple...
