Getting a replacement through Asurion - what happens to the old ESN?

I have a question for those who may know. Let's say that my phone breaks and I get a replacement through Asurion. Does the ESN for the broken phone get "blacklisted" somehow? What I'm curious about is, if I were to get the broken phone fixed somehow, then it should still be allowed to be used... no?

Unless the phone was reported lost or stolen then you will have to send the broken phone back when you receive your new one. If it was reported lost or stolen then that esn# is blacklisted and cant be used on verizon anymore.
