Getting GPS on Google Maps offline

I have a Google Nexus 7 tablet and have downloaded the Google offline map for my area. I hear you can get it to to do GPS, so you get a little dot that shows where you are on the map even when you're offline, but I just can't figure out how to do it. Can anyone help me please?

I would have to try to just have the dot follow me. I did use offline navigation this week when I was out of the country. I searched for addresses while connected, and could navigate to those addresses with no data connection.
