Getting my new unlocked G1 to work with T-Mobile

Lurker
HI, I broke my default G1 phone from T-Mobile and just received from ebay a new unlocked G1 phone which apperently comes with some kind of hiAPK software preinstalled in it. It substantionaly differs from the default software that my old g1 has. i inserted my t-mobile card and the new guy works perfectly as a phone, but there is no internet access at all. How can i get my phone to work as a smartphone as well, - get 3G going, for example. do i need to put special codes somewhere so the phone would know im working with t-mobile?

thanks

Welcome to the forum!
You have to setup APN (access points) for internet under Settings / Wireless & Networks / Mobile networks / Access point names (or similar menu names, it's named so on my phone, maybe not exact the same on G1).
Check the desired setting on your telco web or google and look for example for "t-mobile us 3g apn settings".

nice! i just matched the settings from my old phone for this menu location. thanks.

P.S. i dont like the software that this phone comes with. its buggy. id like to change it back to the default one, but still keep the phone unlocked. is it possible? and if yes, could you paste the link to the article that explains how to change g1's initial package (not sure if this is the proper term for it. im referring to the package that the phone will copy to main memory after hard resetting it (home+end -> alt+w)

Some operators provide additional packages which will be installed after factory reset. If your phone is rooted, you can delete these by few ways (either Android app or adb from computer) :
Root Uninstaller - Android
Root Explorer (File Manager) - Android
Barebones - CyanogenMod Wiki

Do you have official ROM (Check Settings / About phone - Model number, Firmware version, Kernel version, Build number)? If not, you are probably rooted and can use described way to remove the apps. If you have official ROM and no root, you can root the phone (will void warranty) and use the described way afterwards, or root and flash other ROM :

ok here is my data: (what do u think its going on with my phone and what do u think i should do if i just want the original firmware that g1s used to come with, when sold by T-Mobile.

Model number: HTC Dream

Firmware version: 1.6

Baseband version: 62.525.20.18H_2.22.20.23

Kernel version: 2.6.29.6 android@hiapk

Build number: dream-user 1.6 DRC83 14721 ota-rel-keys

Production team: http://www.HiAPK.com

OK, it looks like you have unofficial version (officialy the phone was named "T-Mobile G1", not "HTC Dream") from hiapk. Maybe it also comes rooted (you can try to install "Root Uninstaller" and remove Hiapk application). If it doesn't work, you have 2 choices :
- if you want to have stock phone like delivered by T-Mobile (Android 1.6), just flash official ROM (I think last official version was DRC92, but have found just DRC83 on google) like described here (all data in phone will be deleted)! :
Donut - android-roms - DIY: Upgrade to Donut (Firmware 1.6). - Project Hosting on Google Code
any updates to newer version (DRC92) should be installed OTA in few days

- if you want something newer and root, flash custom ROM (Android 2.1 or 2.2 , all data in phone will be deleted also!) :
