getting old alarm tone from previous cell phone

I have a galaxy s 8 and I was wondering if i could get my previous alarm tone from my galaxy note 4. Does anyone know how to do that?

I assume this is a stock tone rather than one you added? If so then I think you'll need root to copy it, as it will be in the ROM.

If you download a custom ROM based on the stock software (so not an AOSP ROM) to a computer and unzip it you'll probably find it in there - I'd look in /system/media/audio/alarms as my first guess.

Why can't you just go into TOOLS App on the Note 4 Access My Files>Music>look in the list for the tone (name.mp3) then long press on it to share by email to yourself. You may then be able to either save file to a computer then connect via USB so you can put it onto your external SD card. You'll probably have to create a >alarms< folder on the card and put you .mp3 file inside it. Your S8 should be able to access it and allow it as a selection.

Well this is odd. I thought for sure you'd be correct about if the sound was a stock tone, you'd need root access it.
Then reading @toptobottom 's post, about emailing a file to yourself, I thought I'd navigate to the /system/media/audio/alarms on my un-rooted device.
I picked a stock alarm tone, and was able to send it via email to myself.

Note that I am using the Root Explorer app, on an unrooted device able to access stock tones?!?!

Fascinating. I was able to do the same using X-Plore on my unrooted Note tablet. I wonder whether that's a Samsung thing, but haven't any unrooted devices from other manufacturers I can test with (but am used to being asked for root permissions when a file explorer wants to look at anything outside the user storage).

Well that does make it a lot easier!

I have been doing transfers of ringtones/notification sounds this way since having my 1st smartphone - a Blackberry Storm. That was a revolutionary phone of it's time I must say because they nixed that stupid tiny keyboard which I never understood how anyone could use.

From there, I went over to the HTC Droid Incredible, Galaxy S3, Note 3, and S5, all of which allowed selecting .mp3 or .ogg files to be copied, emailed as attachment and saved to phone. The other way was to use Kies and access the files through USB to copy to PC then paste to a Micro SD which you needed to create the respective media>ringtones/notifications folder/subfolders. The phone would then include them as choices automatically even though they are on the external memory. I still have a few fairly old sounds I've liked to this day.

I wonder if they could be transferred using NFC and S Beam activated?

Well, you are only reading files in the system directories, and you would need to be able to read those files to use them, so it makes sense. You would only need root to change them. My guess is the root permission request using root explorer is because it is assuming you want to change something.

I was on my LG G5. Interesting eh? :)

I would surmise the OP should be able to do what he desires then ;)
I've also learned something new too!

**off to start transferring sounds from one device to another ** :D

You know this jogged my memory that way back this was close to being true because Verizon and I believe the other BIG BOY carriers were trying to make us buy ringtones from them so you couldn't just select a stock ringtone and email it.

Other than rooting, the only way was to connect your phone via USB and you were then able to access your files either by Kies for Samsung or my HTC Incredible was simply recognized as another drive to easily access the sound files allowing you to copy/paste onto the micro SD with an SD adapter on your PC. Yeah, there was always talk that they were going to lock us out from doing so but nobody was really buying into their ringtones scheme so they killed that monkey and the show ended.

"Those were the days my friend, I thought they'd never end....." :p

Great, now I got that song stuck in my head, thanks. :D

HTC Incredible eh? Sweet!
I had the Evo 4g as my first "real" android. Fully rooted rom'd, tweaked, flashed, bricked, unbricked, fixed, broke, reroot, you name it...it was awesome! :)

I hope the OP returns to let us know if the suggestions worked!

Yeah, LOL - that is one of those haunting tunes.

A true love relationship for sure! It was the phone of it's day that gave those Moto's a run for the money!

Even if he/she doesn't get back here, it was fun to do some reminiscing. :)
