Help Gingerbread Problems, Want Froyo Back

Since I updated to Gingerbread, the following bugs have been driving me nuts . . .

1 - The navigation lights come on every time you touch the screen, even inside an app. The one that bugs me most is my ebook app. When I'm reading at night, I don't want the navigation lights to come on every time I flip a page or it defeats the purpose of having the dark screen.

2 - Flash doesn't play videos on the browser.

3 - Swype no longer allows you to change a word by double clicking. You have to go back into the word, delete it, and type it by hand or try to swype it again for a word selection box.

4 - When you push the back button in the browser, it closes the page you were on instead of going back to the prior page.

I'm also having problems with my phone creating screen captures when I'm not holding the back button and freezing up at times, but that happened with the Froyo update more often. I've learned to deal with that. I'm sure there are other bugs that need to be fixed in Gingerbread, but those three are the ones I've noticed the most.

My Mesmerize's original software is 2.1, so I can reset back to that . . . But Flash still wouldn't be operational.

Does anyone know if the bugs are going to be fixed soon? Updates take so long with USC that I'm not counting on it. Is there a way to get 2.2 back on my phone? Do I need to root and find a copy somewhere? I'm not sure that I'm confident with rooting my phone, especially since there are so many bugs with the android approved software. Suggestions? Anyone having similar problems?

I haven't experienced any of these problems - yet. I'm very happy with Gingerbread, personally, but the first issue you listed does get on my nerves from time to time. As for the rest, I haven't had those. Did you upgrade your phone via the updater from USCC's website or did you take it into the tech center and have them update it?
 
I think you'll find that the 2.3 release is hands down the best release yet for this phone. Most of the "bugs" you describe are not bugs, they're enhancements to the use of the phone. I agree that it would be nice to be able to turn off the nav bar buttons if that is your preference.

2.1 had a few issues of its own, but 2.2 (any version they released) was a flaming hot mess compared to 2.1. 2.3, to my knowledge, does not have any glaring issues that affect functionality, at least not to the degree we saw in 2.2. 2.3 is truly a dramatic improvement for these phones, and finally make them a reliable, useful device. The one that it should have been a year ago when they came out with them. Too bad they're now being outclassed by the S2's.

The browser issues can be resolved very easily by downloading Dolphin HD browser. It supports flash, and clicking the back button goes back one page. There are also numerous add ons that make it a very useful utility.

Not sure what to tell you about Swype, I don't use it. I prefer Swiftkey for typing.
 
i'll have to agree as well with LaTuFu. The 2.3 is fantastic compared to 2.2. I do get annoyed by the bottom keys lighting up all the time but other than that the only issues I've have have been with LauncherPro under a fresh boot taking a while to allow input.
 
I upgraded at one of the US cell stores. I have the screen shot capture problem as well my other problem is that my phone has what I refer to as "seizures" and it happens mostly between the hrs of 3:30-8 pm my time. The seizure is a constant vibrate or series of vibrations that I have to hit the back button several time and use the power button to sleep the phone and wake it back up.
My son has the memerize as well and his does the same as mine with the screen capture and "seizures".
Any ideas?
 
The screen capture glitch seems to be a mildly annoying but ever present "feature" of the Mesmerize. I've had it occur on mine through every software update since the 2.1 release. You can "release" it by pressing the back button 2-3 times. Since it has been a part of the phone since it has been released, I don't see it going away. It doesn't lock up the phone or prevent usage, so if that is the last problem with this phone I will be fine with it.

The "seizures" occuring at a specific time of day, every day, sounds like it could be a third party application that is trying to run in the background. Apps like Facebook, Gmail, etc. and others will run periodic updates in the background on a schedule that you determine.

You may want to look at the apps you've installed, and try to determine if one of them is running a process during the time you normally have the problem.

It's honestly not something I've heard many people ask about on this forum, so my first suspect would be applications, not the phone software.
 
I've had something similar(seizure) happen to me a couple of times now since gingerbread. I would get an e-mail notification (1) actual e-mail but my phone would go berzerk and start adding up the notices in the notification bar to like 30+ and vibrate or ring for every one.
1 time happened with a hotmail e-mail and the other was with a yahooo e-mail.
I pulled the battery to reboot the phone but it would start right back up again when the phone was sarted.
The only way I could get it to stop was to disable the "notification in status bar when e-mail arives" for the accounts.
Once it stopped, I could re-apply the notification setting and all was well.

It's got be baffled, but then again it's a computer. so.....
 
What email application are you using to control your hotmail and yahoo accounts? (You still use hotmail? Do you still have an AOL account, too? :D)

Yes to hotmail, no to AOL. I use the hotmail for sites that may be apt to send spam mail out.

I use the built in "generic e-mail" app for the hotmail, and I downloaded the yahoo app for my 2 yahoo accounts(1 personal, 1 busness). I use the g-mail app for my 3 g-mail accounts(1 personal 2 business).
 
well I've had some minor issues now 2.3. Somehow when i 'back' button to the main screen after exiting certain apps that stupid City ID app keeps popping up. I have it hidden(as well as other bloatware) hidden via launcherpro so I don't know how it's happening. Needless to say I'm ready to root to get rid of some of this crapware that I never will use.
 
After my gb upgrade i also had the city id popup, but only after receiving a voice phone call. didn't pay too much attention to it initially, but after about the 3rd phone call I'm like wtf is going on here.
I read the fine print of the dialog box, selected the option to not use/subscribe, and haven't had it pop back up since.
 
My phone (samsung mez.) works good with 2.2 but was a little laggy,was looking forward to the faster speed and longer battery life, but got just the opposite, after the update to 2.3 the phone won't even function, shuts off randomly,won't charge, constant freezes, when downloading apps says the phone doesn't have enough space, thought maybe the phone had issues, so i ordered a new one, NOPE not the phone after upgrade on a BRAND new phone, had to factory reset twice just to activate it, and btw it was installed by the tech at the store, BOTH times, unfortnately looks like i'm stickin with 2.2........bummer!!
 
Almost makes one wonder of the store's update source is corrupt.
Not likely but kind of gives one pause, and makes you wonder when the update fails on a brand new out of the box phone.

Yeah something is not right with the install, in the store or not.

Yes, there are a couple of minor glitches (screen shots, etc) but by and large, the Gingerbread update is very stable and very secure. One thing many people fail to remember, 2.3 has a very important security patch to the Android source code. In 2.2, this security hole is still there and can be exploited.

The posting activity in this forum bears out, if in an anecdotal fashion, that 2.3 has been a successful update on most levels. Activity in this forum is nearly non-existent since Gingerbread was released. People rarely come to a product forum and post about how awesome and flawless their product is. They come to forums like this to seek out information to resolve issues with their products. When there is very little posting activity, that tends to mean the product is working reasonably well.

I would take the new phone back to the store, and ask them to do a full wipe install. (It's worth trying to determine whether or not he did the download install like you and I would be able to do, or did he perform a full wipe OS reload when he updated your phone.) Do a factory reset of your phone before he does a full wipe reload. Once the reload is complete, be sure to do *228 as you are setting up your phone.

It is entirely possible that if your phone was indeed brand new that they may have had a phone that was loaded with 2.1, and there were critical components of the software that were missing when it was updated directly from 2.1 to 2.3. (I have no idea if this is an accurate theory, but just another possibility to consider before "blaming 2.3")
I would suggest you verify what your replacement phone was (NIB or refurb). You would be one of the few people I know that got a NIB phone as a replacement, not a "refurb". Did you get a new phone, complete with brand new packaging, or did you get a replacement swap in the mail that came in a plain brown box? If you got a brown box, you got a refurb. The only problem with "refurbs", is retailers are famous for sending in legitimately broken phones to their return sites, and an employee cleans it up and drops it into a refurb box. You get it as a replacement and no matter what you do, its not going to work because it was broken in the first place and should have been taken out of circulation. I've had this happen once with USCC (with a Mez, too) and several times with AT&T. It happens.

Long story short, the 2.3 update is the last and least likely suspect in this situation, in my personal opinion. I've had tons of troubles with 2.1, 2.2, and several replacement phones. I've had a virtually trouble free phone since 2.3. Multiple users in this forum who had struggles similar to mine are also reporting similar success stories with 2.3.

I'm not being blindly loyal, I am certainly no USCC or Samsung fanboy. I just think a solid dose of perspective goes a long way.

I hope this info helps, and good luck getting your phone issues resolved.

I wish I had the luck you are having with your phone! I still have problems. The phone becomes unresponsive almost daily at some point or the other. I have to pull battery. The Gallery is very slow and laggy and often phone become unresponsive. i have had my keboard force close often.

My other biggest complaint is that I have PLENTY of room on both my SD and phone memory, and yet I still get a "not enough memory" message. bullcrap.

Again, all I can suggest is run through the checklist of items I've suggested. "not enough memory" issues and lag issues suggest to me that the update did not install properly, for one reason or another.

I will never stand up and say the Mez has been/is now a bulletproof phone. But I do feel that since the 2.3 update, it has been a much more stable and responsive phone. If yours is still struggling, I would look into a full wipe reload or a complete phone swap.

There's no reason to struggle with this phone until your next upgrade, when it is possible to get one working well.

Sorry to hear you're still struggling with it, I know you're one that has had ongoing frustrations with it.
 
I know recently "after the update" The screen has frozen where I had to do a battery pull to get it working again.

I just done a factory reset, lets see If i have any issues now that I have phone set back up

Ok so i dont eread so that doesnt help nor do i skype but as for the back button....yeah that shit sucks....a lot. The screen capture i found out is actually holding the back button and pressing the power/lock button on the side at the same time....once you figure that out you tend to not do it as much lol
