Root Gingerbread vs. ICS root

I have an Incredible 3g and love it but it is time to upgrade to the latest greatest for me through Verizon. My question, should I buy a gingerbread 4g or a n ICS 4g? Which is easier to root? I need my wireless tether, which I can not live without. Also, Titanium Backup Pro is a must. I like the Nexus and I like the Razr Maxx. Nexus ships with ICS but the Razr is still shipping with gingerbread. Please help me make up my mind ... it all comes down to which is easier to root. Plus, transfer all my applications, files, and contacts to the new phone. Thoughts please?!?!!?

If you want a phone that you can actually use as a phone and battery that doesn't need recharged 2-3 times a day maxx hands down. If you need to change roms every other day nexus is the way to go. I had the nexus and reception was and still is terrible compared to the maxx not to mention battery life isn't even close between the 2, the nexus battery is downright awful. Not to mention if you wait and currently have an unlimited data plan, then upgrade in a few months or whenever verizon gets rid of them, you could lose out on unlimited data.

If you must get a phone now, I would go with the MAXX. It currently has Gingerbread but only for another month. At Maxx. Which it will then be upgraded to ICS. If you can wait a little bit. I would hold out for the rumored "HD" or whatever it may be called. Either way, you will have a great phone and wont be disappointed.

I am leaning more towards the maxx as well. Is one either version of droid, ICS or gingerbread more easily rooted than the other. I need the wireless tether and titanium pro. The Incredible HD does sound intriguing but I currently have an unlimited plan and I want to upgrade to a 4G now before Verizon forces a shared or cap plan later this summer when you upgrade. One more question ... should I take the OTA for ICS if I have a good rooted gingerbread maxx already?

If you are rooted most likely you have a custom recovery, so you would not be able to take the ota. Plus if you took the ota you may lose root.

I'm pretty new to the MAXX so I could be really, really wrong (or just plain not understanding what you are trying to say), but I've been rooted almost since the day I got my MAXX, I have ClockWorkMod recovery installed and I've successfully received notification of, and installed, the .181 OTA update - all without removing the custom recovery or unrooting my phone.

I do have Voodoo installed and used that to recover my root after the .181 update .... if that makes a difference.

OTOH - if you are referring to receiving the ICS OTA - well .... I don't know what will happen when that comes. I may have to restore to stock before I can do anything about the anticipated ICS update.

The only reason you were able to get root back is because of voodoo, otherwise you would have lost it. Usually custom recovery blocks ota updates but maybe that isn't the case with bootstrap on moto devices, I have up until the maxx not had a moto device that used bootstrap and was referring to CWR which blocks ota's.
