gMail Account: How To Enable Sync?

My instance of Chrome on my N7000 has reverted to showing only "Mobile" bookmarks.

I also notice that Settings | Accounts | (my gMail account) says that sync is disabled.

I cannot figure out how to re-enable it.

??

Settings/General/Accounts/Google/your email address/ Scroll down to Sync Chrome and press it to get the check mark.

That is what I had been doing... 'Tap to sync now'.... but the label "Sync disabled" persists. All the others except "Sync Picasa Web albums" seem to work because instead of 'Sync disabled' they say "Last synced on....".

Seems like it must be something with my gMail login because that is what Chrome and Picasa have in common.

But sync for those two is working a-ok on my P600 tablet, so I don't think it is anything with the account per-se. Also, no problem logging in via the mail app and retrieving my gMail messages - so it's not my ID/PW.

This thing is rooted, and I'm starting to wonder if I've shot myself in the foot somewhere along the line - having uninstalled and re-installed Google Play services a couple of times for one thing...
