Gmail app says I have more messages than are really there

That is because it counts "conversations"
Log in to your gmail from a computer and you will see what I mean.
You can also delete the others from there.

It's also possible that you deleted a conversation which then got a new message into it, confusing the app. Hop onto your PC and check if there are any extra hanging around. Happens to me occasionally.

It also may be an issue of needing to refresh. If you have no luck on your desktop, try sending yourself am email from another account and see if that updates the count (that's how I fixed it when it happened to me).

LOL, what I said was similar but not quite. There's this weird bug in the GMail app where if you delete a conversation that gets a new message, the app won't show the unread message sometimes, but still shows that you have unread mail. So you'll open up your mail, have nothing new, but it keeps saying that there's one unread.

Turns out the messages were getting deleted from my device, but not being moved to the trash folder on Google's side of things...
