gmail - composing new email

I have done a search and not finding the answer I am looking for. I am running android and have 2 gmail accounts hooked up with the gmail app. They are great for reading my emails, but I cannot figure out how to compose a new email.

I have read in various forums that you go to "menu" and then "compose". If I am in my gmail app I see no "menu" button. Where do I find it?
