Gmail - I get instant emails!

OM2

Android Enthusiast
I've got Gmail running
I get almost instant notifications of new email - give or take 1 minute
Is this how its supposed to be?
(Not complaining!)
I've only done some basic testing - but it seems really fast pickup!

I thought Blackberry had a patent or something that stopped other mobile companies giving *instant* email notifications?

I don't think you can patent how fast something gets done... all a fast food joint would have to do is patent a burger in one minute, then they could say they are legally the fastest food there is.

yeah the gmail app comes through instant, that is how it is. You can turn background data off and that will make you manually refresh it but I believe some other apps need the background data on to run correctly so I wouldn't turn it off.

gmail app is great.

Yes, these phones are designed to run with google applications. Gmail is instantaneous because of this google integration.

the gmail app is instantaneous because it supports PUSH.

It has nothing to do with any sort of proprietary dealings LOL.

Opera and Thunderbird (and many other apps) also support PUSH via IMAP Idle on gmail.

Yep. After using K9 to read my POP3 accounts, I finally opted on having those servers forward my mail to my Gmail account. Now, mail always shows up on my Droid much sooner than on my PC running Thunderbird. Gotta love it!

Actually, my regular IMAP email shows up withing 5-10 min or so too... I have my refresh set at 2 hours or something like that. Not sure why or how, but it seems I'm getting push email all around

Tapatalk. Samsung Moment. Yep.

I've noticed that I get a gmail notification on my phone before the email even comes in on my PC so can't be bad!

I just need to decide which app/icon to use now - I've somehow managed to end up with 3 on my homescreen - mail, gmail and googlemail. I do get the little '1' showing on the icon before I can actually read the email though.
