Gmail: I want it to show me first NEW / UNREAD msg

When the Gmail app shows a bolded/new message in a multi-message thread and I click on it to open it, the app always opens the FIRST message in the thread, requiring me to manually scroll down (sometimes for a very long time) to get to the one new email.

I'm frankly surprised this isn't the default app behavior (doesn't everyone just want to go to the new message?), and I looked through every Gmail app setting and couldn't find any option. Am I doing something wrong? How do I get it to just jump-to the first unread message in a chain?

it's not elegant and it should be a permanent feature, but for the time being open Gmail and tap on the magnifying glass icon (search) then type 'is:unread in:inbox' (no quotes).

The next time you open Gmail it will be the top of your search list so you don't have to type it every time.
