Help Gmail not quite syncing

Denise51

Newbie
Gmail works fine on the phone and is synced.

When I log in on web for gmail all the emails I had archived or trashed on the phone is done correctly.
But when I receive an email whilst logged in on the web and I archive or trash it, it does not sync with my phone, the phone notification light stays flashing. I have to open the gmail app and archive the message or trash etc.,

Any ideas please.

It doesn't usually happen instantly. It takes a while to sync and for your phone to know the email has even been checked from another device.

As madbat mentioned, syncing might take a few minutes every time you do something, especially if your phone is just idling on a flaky 3G or 4G connection. But even if you're using your computer and your phone on the same WiFi network there will be times when a sync will be immediate and sometimes not, the refresh rates accessing your Gmail account via a web browser are done right away while your phone's refresh rate can vary.

But if this sporadic syncing issue has been happening to you for a long time, maybe try checking your Gmail settings for IMAP/POP. If you've had your Gmail account going back several years it 'might' still be set for POP, but you'd be better off using IMAP.

Thank you for your replies, it does vary sometimes like 20 mins or not at and sometimes within 2/3 mins.
And yes it is IMAP

Just checking settings on phone but cannot find the server settings for any of my gmail accounts, I'm sure you could see the set up before, name etc.,

Are you using your phone's default Email app or the Gmail app? Odd that your automatic syncing can vary by that much, does it sync if you manually refresh?

If you go into your phone's Settings/Accounts/Google your email account name should be listed in 'Accounts' section. Tap on it and in the list of several Sync items (Calendar, Contacts, Docs, Drive, Gmail, etc.) that pops up try unchecking the Gmail selection, then go to Settings/More/Application manager/scroll to the right to 'All'/ and then scroll down to either your 'Email' or 'Gmail' and clear the cache. Go back to Settings/Account/Google and hit the checkbox for Gmail that you had unchecked before, and then tap the 'Sync now' button at the bottom.
