Gmail notification in status bar not dismissing

Hope someone can help with this...On my old S5, after I opened an unread Gmail message, the Gmail notification icon in the status bar would automatically dismiss. On the S7, the Gmail icon notification remains after reading the email(s). The only way to dismiss the notification on the status bar is to manually roll down the status bar shade, and clear it.

It will go away after a little while by itself.

Thanks rkkeller. Turned out to be Light Manager that was causing the problem. Well documented, and also screws up Gmail notifications on Android Wear. Turned it off and all is back to normal.
