Gmail questions- mark all read, navigating

1) Is there a way to move to the next message without going back to the message list? I don't see one, and this seems like a huge oversight.

2) Is there any way to mark all messages read? I hate not having this (that is one thing I hated on iPhone). If I look at list of msgs and see all unimportant stuff, I would just like to mark them all read.
