This is something that has thoroughly confused me over the years, until I finally found a weird combination of settings that seemed to work. And now that I have just set up a new tablet, I'm revisiting the confusion all over again. I'm hoping someone can explain how this works.
So in the Gmail app, when you do Settings > [your email address] > Manage Labels, you have the option to set the sync for each label (including each inbox, such as Primary, Updates, Forums, etc. as well as Starred, Sent, All Mail, Spam, etc.) to None, last 30 days, or All.
To me, this suggests that None will not show any emails of that particular label on the device you are using, 30 days will show the last 30 days of email, and All will show them all. Except this never seems to be how it works.
Currently, I have everything except All Mail and Spam set to All. When I set these to All, there is a constant load screen and nothing happens. When I set it to last 30 days, it shows some emails, but not even all the email from the last 30 days (I had one from this morning that didn't show up) AND it still shows emails from months ago! If I set it to None, it shows everything!
So please, someone clarify this for me. One thing that confuses me is that it's under the "Labels" settings, so I'm wondering if this even has to do with syncing emails the way I'm thinking it does. If I set all of them to None, will I still see all my emails? If so, what's the point of this?
I just don't understand these syncing options at all, and none of them really seem to do what their name suggests they would do.
Thanks.
