Gmail: There's an "OLDER" button, but why no "NEWER" button?

This seems like a pretty basic thing, but in the Gmail app, I can hit "OLDER" to see the next oldest message, but why can't I see the NEWER message. I don't know about any of you, but when I get new messages, I start with the new oldest one and work my way to the newest one.

Is there a setting I'm not aware of?

Interesting - I never noticed that (I usually only get one or two messages before reading them). Did you notice that if you press the Menu key, there is a "Newer" button on the menu?

I looked through all the settings and I couldn't find anything about it. But I'm relatively new with this, so I thought maybe I missed it somehow.
