What would happen if you were staying abroad in a hotel with wifi? Could you use that without extra charges? I would think yes, but you never know.

I just read this thread, along with the thread from jarubio. Without clicking on the links, I had visions of the kind of charges that would bankrupt a small country (and some large countries these days too!).

But then I clicked on the link. $102? Seriously, is that all? I used to manage a small fleet of mobile phones in the UK as part of my IT Managers role, and it wasn't uncommon for people to go away for a week and come back with a

Here's the solution (or it should be; I haven't been overseas yet):

1. Use Anycut to create a shortcut to "Testing"
2. Click on Testing.
3. Click on Phone Information
4. Hit Menu button
5. Click on More
6. Click on Disable data connection

This turns off the network access. Note that GPRS service now switches to "disconnected".
Now you should have a phone that does voice calls, but no data access.

I'll be testing this next week.
