Going from one Android to another

Quboid

Android Enthusiast
I presently have a Hero (HTC Hero EU, 1.5 unlocked, on Vodafone UK) and I'm quite tempted to get an HTC Desire (2.1 unlocked), which will hopefully be available in about a week. What's the situation with going from one device to another?

I will be transferring my MicroSD card so my data (pretty much just photos) will be on the new device but my settings and apps won't be, as I understand it. As I will be using the same Google account, will all my market purchases be there ready to download for free? Will app specific settings be lost (e.g. high-scores, preferences) or are they typically on the SD card?

Basically I'm concerned about running into something nasty that I hadn't considered so I'm wondering if there are any gotchas I should know about.

I went from a Magic to a Nexus One, using the same Google Account.
I lost preferences, high scores, etc, but all apps (paid / free) transferred.

The only app I had issue transferring was CoPilot as it is licensed using the Checkout order number and the IMEI. This was solved with the help of CoPilot support (I had followed their procedure for transferring the licence between Android devices, however they needed to reset at their end).

Time to switch over was about 3 hours of setting things back up - this compares well with a couple of days going from non-Android phone to non-Android phone.
