Going to Canada for a week

I will be going to Canada for a week, what do I need to know about minutes and data. Should I get the international plan for the 1 week that I will be there. Is there a way to cache the gps map so it doesnt use the data to download it.

I assume you're on VZW, given the subforum. They are the only carrier I know of with a North America calling plan (very hard to find on their website), which will avoid high roaming charges for calls in Canada. Will you make a lot of calls? Perhaps you can sign up and then discontinue when you return. They usually pro rate charges. But watch out about discontinuing your existing plan in case you can't get it back.

For data, they have a new global roaming add-on, I think 100MB for$25. This is in addition to your normal data plan. They can pro rate that too.

As for caching maps, it probably depends on the phone. There are some apps I think that may do that for particular cities. Sorry I have never tried that.

I'm actually in Canada right now. Verizon int'l plans are by the month, so I've never considered them for a week long trip. I usually just disable data before I cross the border and rely on WiFi for any data needs, or do without.

BTW - Texting does not incur any additional charges. Send or receive texts falls under whatever your current plan provides.
