Going to Mexico with T-Mobile

I'm going to Mexico for work next week, I have T-Mobile with unlimited everything ($70 plan), and I was wondering if I needed to do anything in particular with my Nexus 5; I see I have access to unlimited data and texting.

Thanks

You have unlimited edge speed data -128kbps. If you want real data, go to a local carrier (I go to TelCel, since they are huge and use 1900) and get a local SIM

It depends on how long you will be. If it is more than a few days, I would recomend doing what gtbarry says.

"Me da un SIM con plan de datos porfavor?"

That might help XD.

I am not sure how true the EDGE data thing is. I am in Peru right now and I am getting 3g speeds. It is amazing. You can do pretty much everything for free except make calls. I am still using my GSIII (Nexus 5 arrives at my house today) and WIFI calling works great for free calls to the US. T Mobile is Changing the Game with this global data thing.

t-mobile CMO said on the day of this announcement that you are only guaranteed edge speed data (I recall it clearly because he specified 128 kbps - which is odd for a Marketing guy to say to the press). The CEO made no mention of the speeds in his announcement.

Hopefully, that was just t-mobile covering themselves. Or them saying that because it depends on which country you are in and they went with the LCD.

So, I guess I would say to the OP:
- As Durhamite points out, you MAY get a fast connection for free in Mexico. But t-mobile never guaranteed fast speeds.
- As, Andrews317 said, if you are there for a short while it may not be an issue.
- If you need and want fast data, checkout TelCel for best coverage and price for a short-term SIM

What is the t mobile policy on international capability using a pay as you go sim card? I have a sprint contract and would not switch to t mobile but I want to have a t mobile sim card as a backup for business travel in areas where I do not have good sprint service. This is a rare occasion but it does occur. Therefore I don't want any kind of commitment to T Mobile I just want to have a sim that I can pop in and pay as I go. Even their $3.00 per day plan would be great for me.

I have a second need though for periodic international capability. I have a onesimcard.com card now but I need to get a new one because it is not a micro sim. Before I got one from them I was curious if I could solve both of my needs with one mobile product? So, sorry for the long winded question but is there a solution with tmobile that gives me pay as I go usage domestically as well as reasonable international rates?

Arrives today to Peru? That was fast considering Google doesn

No I am from the USA. My nexus got delivered yesterday. I have my gs3 with me in Peru. I am in Peru for work. I won't be to touch my nexus until next week.

Back on topic: I did a speed test today. Getting 15kbps up and down. But I have the 3g icon. Speeds feel much faster than that though. I am not streaming video but Facebook feedly xda. Etc works fine.

Oh, got it.

Thank you everyone for your responses! I'll probably only be down for four days so I won't do anything, but potentially an extra week, so then I may rethink that. . .

I have not been oversea yet with my HTC One, but don't you have to do the APN manually for that local carrier?

I wonder if the oversea SIM card with automatically do the APN.

Any ideas?

It depends on the SIM card/carrier from my experience. Some will preload the correct apn into the device, others will require you to manually enter the correct settings.

I see. I keep a list of checklist when I go on vacation locally and overseas so I don't miss anything.

I will add this to my international checklist of things to do. :-)

Hello
We are in Peru right now and cannot connect to the internet with a T-mobile tablet.
Do you happen to remember the name of the network you were able to connect to? also did you have to perform any additional settings like entering that networks APN? or did you just connect by telling the phone to find a network automatically?
Anything would be helpful
Thanks
