Root Going to root - how do a back stuff up?

Ideally I'd like a way to back it up to my PC so it's independent of the phone - is there any way to do this?

If not, what's the best alternative?

What are you looking at backing up?

Contacts etc should be backed up to the gmail account associated with the handset. Apps etc are associated with the gmail account too so once linked, they should redownload. You'll lose stuff like game progress and app data, but other than that it should be ok.

I take it you're going to flash a new ROM? Once you're rooted you don't need to start the flash process straight away, you can install an app called Titanium Backup which will back up the data associated with specific apps too. You can pay for it and it will do them all at once, or the free version, you need to restore each app individually. Worth it dependant on what data you want to save/how much you want to save it.

Stuff on the SD Card should be ok, but if you want to back it up (a good idea anyway), you can just mount the phone as a USB Drive to the PC, then copy all the stuff to a folder of your choosing.

Via a PC, access the gmail account you've associated with the handset, click on contacts (it's on the top left of the page). Do you see the contacts that are on your phone? There's also an app called SMS Backup & Restore available on the market to backup SMS.

Edit - MyPhoneExplorer will back up 90% of what's on your handset, SMS, contacts, pics etc. Take a look at that, see if it does what you need it to.

Nope, easy mistake to make though, so no need to be embarrassed. It's a 3-4 step process, with rooting being the first. Rooting just grants you super user access to the phone. This allows you (amongst other things) to install the software needed which allows you to flash the alternative ROM. You can read up on the process here. It seems a lot, but it is relatively easy.

BTW, we have a very different concept of rooting here in Ireland... couldn't possibly comment further in polite company

Ther is also 0 Backup available, to back-up your SD card......but be careful, it does not back-up apps on the SD card:

To avoid piracy, the folder .android_secure cannot be backup'd. It contains the applications that have been moved to the SD card (from Android 2.2 Froyo on), but not data nor configurations, so just reinstall them if you need it.

"Rooting" also has a similar meaning in Scotland .
