Help Good and free navi app?

Biffos

Android Enthusiast
Is there a good and free navi app?

Each time I see somebody using a navi app on the Smartphone it does not work. And the navis I used a few years ago didn't work very well either.

I do not have a mobile Internet connection.

Hi, apart from using Google Maps in off-line mode which I have to say is good, I can recommend that you have a look at Magic Earth :-

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.generalmagic.magicearth

It is free with unlimited worldwide map downloads and has an excellent user interface.

I regularly use both, the main difference is that currently Google Maps can only provide navigation for road use whereas Magic Earth can be used for walking/hiking as well.

With both you need to download the maps to your device using WiFi. It is slightly more difficult to download the maps with Google Maps in that you have to select the map area you require by scrolling the map view and zooming in and out. The benefit is that you can often end up using far less storage. I quite often only download a specific town or city area as that is where I rely on navigation to arrive at the required address.

On balance I have to say that I find Google Maps voice directions are slightly the better of the two.

I should also mention OsmAnd :-

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.osmand

Which again I use regularly, particularly for walking /hiking. It shows almost all national and local walking/hiking routes and facilitates easy creation of your own routes as GPX files which you can then use for navigation.

Many thanks. OK, I will try the third one as well, sounds very good. Hope, I have enough space on the phone.

Very many thanks, again!

Have a look at the free Mapfactor Navigator offline GPS navigator...

My favorite free offline GPS navigator, and I've tried them all !!! ...

Thank you, just installing it.

Whatfor does a navi need authorization / access for media, files, images and such?

After downloading the maps I need, I deny any wifi and data accesses by the app by using the free NoRoot Firewall app.

If you're curious about the apps' accesses, contact the developer.

Enjoy your trips !! ...
