Good, Bad, Ugly of rooting the phone?

Can someone please help me and let me know about the "good, bad,,ugly" of trying to root my phone.

Does it offer performance enhancement?
Are you able to remove the pre-installed MetroPCS apps which I *NEVER* use?
Trying to root, could I turn my phone into a brick, missing a step?

Is rooting against MetroPCS policy? (only reason I'm concerned is if I Have to take it in to get new screen saver, etc. (Thin plastic cover on top of the phone to protect it (and they notice it's rooted).

Essentially want to know "why" I hear a lot of people talking about rooting and what I should expet by rooting

OH and is there "a *TRUSTED * app for that" ;-)
I downloaded one from the Market, and Avast considered it a Virus..so I deleted it.

THANK YOU! for the help!

The process itself won't increase you'r performance, but you will be able to adjust you'r memory settings, processor speed if you install a custom Kernal, ect. So yes, if you plan on doing those things.

Yes, you can download apps that will allow you to delete ANYTHING on your system including the metro pcs apps (Just be careful)

Yes you can brick your phone if you don't follow the guide step by step. Read it several time before you attempt. The guides on the forum for your phone are very thorough and the devs do an awesome job.

It will void your warranty, but the phone is your's. Metro can't do anything to you for rooting you'r phone other than refusing to honor the warranty. Thats it.

Rooting is good for a lot of reason, you can remove bloatware, turn your phone into a wifi hotspot, tweak your phone in ways you wouldn't normally be able to. You can even install custom roms, and kernals if you want, which basically make you phone run a lot smoother and give you more control.

If you need any further help I would be glad to help you out.

Good Luck!

Man am i glade i found this post because i am on board with it .
I also have the new metro esteem m910 and have just rooted it and am not sure what to do next so i look forward to reading your posts on this matter thanks in advance ,.

They have a custom kernal and rom for the esteem and have overclocked it to over 2.0ghz! I would start with that one. There should be a walkthrough and an everything root guide on that forum. Check it out and if you have any more questions feel free. Im not as experienced as the devs on here but I can defintley help you with the basics.

After one does this root procedure, what is left on the phone ?

rooting the phone wont change anything other than installing superuser on your phone (this is a must because superuser will ask for you approbal anytime you try to alter system files, its for your protection) The rest is up to you. You download the apps that allow you to delete bloatware, overclock your processor, adjust your memory settings, ect.

So one can root their phone and keep it as is to make sure everything works. Okay. Is there a list of what is safe and not safe to remove from the Admire ?

Safely Removeable Bloatware
So no one bricks their phones... Many of these are self-explanatory and you can figure most out from the icons, but better safe than sorry.

These are located in /system/app so don't go deleting things you're unsure of.

Easy-WiFi-android-4.0.136.apk - MetroPCS Easy WiFi
(You could leave this intact as it circumvents the login procedure at SOME public hotspots (such as Starbucks))

Metro411_V1.0.7.1_02042011.apk - Metro411

metroappstore1.5.apk - Metro App Store
(You may want to leave this if you want to rebloat your phone, but otherwise useless)

MetroBackup_1.70.apk - Metro BackUp
(We have droids, our contacts are safe with the benevolent Google, as long as your account is set up)

MetroPCS_Visual_Voice_Mail_3_14_04.apk - Visual Voice Mail

MetroSTUDIO_v1.00.30_Build30_03302011.apk - MetroStudio

MyExtras.apk - My Extras
(They're extra annoying)

MyMetro.apk
(May consider leaving as it allows you to view account info, but can be removed)

Samsung_R720_IMandSocial_V4.0.8_build0203.apk - IM and Social
(AIM, Facebook, Twitter, crap like that)

SamsungR720_MetroNavigator_4.9.1_Build_86_04252011 _rel_signed_PROD.apk - MetroNavigator
(We have Navigation for this)

ThinkFree.apk - ThinkFree Office
(May be useful to some people)

z7-android2x.apk - Mail@Metro
(Not necessary unless you don't use Gmail)

Hope this helps!

Go to the LG Esteem forum, & go into all things root. A very simple process, but be careful with trying to experiment with areas you may not know about once the root is done. I hard bricked one phone, but with help on here was able to bring it back to life. I like the rooted phone better...perrsonally. It's all about what you want to do with your phone. I want mine to do just about everything.

Basically....Do u tweak n patch windows n ur computer hardware?
The same answer would apply for Android, with the added benefits of smaller learning curve n much diminished chance of disaster-although possible. As long as u NEVER skip backing up, no matter how seemingly unnecessary...and don't multitask something else when tweaking. As Andrew dice clay used to say,"concentrate............"

the good is having complete control over every aspect of your phone.

the bad and the ugly is bricking your phone or making it unstable because you dont know what you're doing and you dont follow instructions.

i did the same thing when i screwed up my play store by deleting metroweb. all the issues people have with rooting are self-inflicted.

if you dont think you are computer savvy enough to understand the instructions for rooting, you shouldnt do it. you dont really need to root in order to take advantage of the phones capabilities anyway. having total control over your phone can be a bad thing if you dont know what you're doing.

the clockwork mod they have in another thread looks interesting but i dont understand the instructions on how to install it correctly so im not messing with it. you have a bunch of people in that thread talking about how they screwed up their phone trying to install the mod because they went in all willy nilly.
