Google accounts question

Hi,

I have a question regarding google contacts, calender and email. I've been on android for a couple of years having had the galaxy s2 and now the s3. Yesterday I convinced my wife to leave apple and join me in the android world. Her galaxy s3 arrives today!

My main concern is the google account. In the past we've successfully shared a calender from my google account. She has always had her own Yahoo mail account. Now that she's going Android I'm confused as to how we can make things work. I want to use my account on both phones for the Play store and the calendar. However, i need to have a separate account for her email and contacts. What would be the best way to do this? I think we can join both sets of contacts together on one account and just view different contacts lists but the email problem remains. Is it possible to use my google account on her phone without her receiving my gmail and also get her yahoo mail account on her phone?

Sorry for the rambling nature of the post. :)

You add your Google account on her phone and choose to not sync the things you don't want synced to her phone. Pretty simple. She could still access your Gmail but it will not auto sync and she won't receive notifications I don't think.

If you want to know what we (wife and I) do, we have 3 Gmail accounts: a joint account and individual accounts for each of us. Our contacts, calendar, and any online billing, shopping, etc accounts that we have go to the joint account. Our individual stuff goes to our individual Google accounts. Works really well because we have shared e-mail, calendar, contacts with our joint account that has info in it we both need to have access to and have our individual accounts for our other personal stuff.

Yes you correct that's what you do just add account to both phones and uncheck the mail on her phone. Or spice it up make another account and just copy and paste the numbers you use to the new account and the new account can use the old account as the backup..

Thanks for the replies. I have successfully managed to set up my wife's phone with my google account. The mail thing works just fine as does the calendar. However, I have noticed a slight flaw in my cunning plan. For contacts I set up a separate group for my wife. I was actually quite pleased with myself. On her phone it was all good as I set her contacts settings to just view the contacts in her group. Unfortunately when it comes to sms services things get messy. I've yet to find an sms app that allows the user just to view certain contacts. Chomp, GO SMS Pro and the stock sms app on the S3 all display EVERY contact in my google account. So everytime I want to sent a message I have to wade through over 200 contacts. I think what I may end up doing is creating a google account for the wife so that she sees only her contacts and I see only mine. I'm sure there'll be a way of importing my calendar into her account. The mail won't be a problem as she is with yahoo anyway.

Handcent will allow you to select a group or specific members from a group, just use the "Groups" tab and expand the groups to see the members and select who you want to send to. Might be a little clunky but it should accomplish the goal.

Why have merged contacts?

Can't you just start typing said contacts name and there name will appear along with people with similar names? This is what i do to save time from shuffling through all my contacts.

I like the scrolling and ticking feature. Allows me to select multiple contacts at the same time!
