Google Assistant... Calling on speakerphone

A few days ago I tried using Google Assistant to make a call on speakerphone. I said something like,
'OK Google, call Timmy on speakerphone.'

The nice lady said, 'Calling Timmy on speakerphone,' and indeed Timmy was called and the call was placed on speakerphone. Cool!

Now, Google Assistant won't stop calling on speakerphone. I say, 'OK Google, call Angie mobile,' and the nice lady says, 'Calling Angie mobile on speakerphone.' I say, 'Call Joe' and I get, 'Calling Joe on speakerphone.') And these calls are indeed placed on speakerphone.

In most of these cases I am using a Bluetooth earpiece. This has happened with 3 different Bluetooth earpieces. Even though the BT earpiece is on and connected to the phone, and even though I don't specify speakerphone, I get speakerphone. I have to manually touch the Bluetooth button to switch away from speakerphone.

I've tried, 'Call Joe on Bluetooth,' but I still get speakerphone.

How do I get Google Assistant to stop using speakerphone? I would love tips and suggestions.

That is strange. I just tried it and called my garage to schedule an oil change on speaker and it worked fine. The next call i made was to voicemail and the speaker was off. Not sure what's setting your calls to speaker on by default.

What phone is it and what Android version do you have?

I'll go ahead and answer your questions, for what it's worth. I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 (SM-G930V), Android version 7.0.

I had not mentioned that I had tried clearing the cache for the Google App, which did not solve the problem. As I was getting ready to type this response and give you my phone and Android version, I decided I should try clearing the phone's cache. I did clear the phone's cache; then I tried "OK Goggle, call Angie" while on my bluetooth earpiece. It called Angie, patching the call through my BT earpiece, as it should.

I surmise that clearing the phone's cache solved the problem.

This issue has been bothering me too. I just read that if the phone is LOCKED and you use bluetooth to call, it will default to speakerphone. If it is NOT locked and you use bluetooth to voice dial, then it will default to bluetooth. I haven't tested it yet, but that makes sense to me. Either way it is a VERY ANNOYING issue... hope it's fixed soon

This thing is killing me! I asked it to dial my girlfriend on speaker ONE TIME because I'd forgotten my Bluetooth.... now every time I call her I have to switch it from speaker back to Bluetooth!!!

Google screwed this up again with their latest release. It was fixed. Until Google comes out with a fix, you have to disable the app, which will uninstall the latest version, then enable the app. You can find the Google app in App Manager. Be sure not to update Google from the Play Store. No more "Update all" until Google comes out with a fix. It's a bunch of BS.

I fixed this by uninstalling the Google assistant, then restarting my Samsung S8, then installing Google Assistant from the play store.
As a result dialing and connection occur from my bluetooth

I've had this exact issue on every Samsung android device I've owned for the past 5 years (Galaxy S7, S8, S9, Note 9, and now S20 Ultra). I've even spoken with Samsung directly and they tell me "That's odd, that doesn't happen to anyone else. It must be your bluetooth device". I've had 8 bluetooth devices in that time, and it happens with all of them.

This phone is brand new. I've had it 3 days. First call I made was via bluetooth, and it did it immediately.

This seems like a small problem, but consider that I'm a truck driver, and to make hands free calls is a pretty big deal. I have to interact with the device itself every time I make a call while the screen is off and locked. If the screen is on, it's not an issue. Why being locked has anything to do with it is a mystery though.

Oh, and notice I specified Samsung devices. I did have an LG G6 between the S8 and S9, and it didn't do it with that phone.

I think I'll call Samsung again since they can't blame the bluetooth device anymore
