Google Calendar on XP IE8

It's probably going on the MSIE 8.0 running XP, user agent string.

Chrome should install on XP with a minimum of SP2. I've done it on my office PC.

I’m pondering trying Bayden UAPick:

Loaded it. Pretended to be a few different things, Google sites seem happiest when I have it set to Opera 9.63.

No more nag!

Edit: never mind. Masquerading as Opera, calendar is read-only. Some others work but Groups won’t load. Tried ‘em all, back to IE8 and the nags.

Tried to install Chrome Frame several times and it finally caught. And right now, the nag is gone! I have no idea what else it’s doing in there, nothing new in the programs folder, nothing new in IE8 Tools... a complete and so-far wonderful mystery.

But that was apparently only because I tried the single-user path. And that means I have to logon to any Google site over and over, which is more trouble then just clicking

Grrr... just tried Firefox in earnest. It is definitely faster and does not nag about the calendar – the whole point of this – but it has no idea how to import bookmarks. I just spent hours dragging IE links over. And now that I’ve done that, I have to try them all and figure out how to change their icons, cuz I do that.

edit: And it doesn’t use anywhere near the memory that IE8 does.

edit: Gobacked, Mozilla never happened on my PC.

I surrender, although it’s way past Oct 26 2012, everything still works and I still get nagged:

Internet Explorer 8 users
As previously announced, Internet Explorer 10 launches on October 26, 2012, and as a result, we will discontinue support for Internet Explorer 8 shortly afterwards, on November 15. Prior to this date, users accessing Google Apps services using Internet Explorer 8 will see a message recommending that they upgrade their browser.
Organizations that depend on old versions of Internet Explorer may want to consider a dual browser strategy.

Google Apps users with unsupported browsers may find that some features do not function, or the application doesn't load. For example:
Calendar: Calendars display in read-only mode.
Gmail: Gmail users are redirected to the basic HTML interface of Gmail. Drive: Drawings and presentations don't display properly.

I now have Chrome and Firefox installed, but I only use them when I must, since I inexplicably still prefer IE8. I just tried to install Google’s Chrome Frame Plugin about five times (again), but it will not. It’s supposed to be a cure for this exact mismatch...

On the umpteenth try, I got Chrome Frame to install. Rebooted, started IE8, it shows up as an enabled add-on. But I still have the same problems as before, that being the “You are using an old browser which will soon be unsupported. Upgrade to a modern browser, such as Google Chrome."

... apparently, a complete waste of time.

Then, googling for tips, I find:

There's a setting in IE to "enable third party browser extensions" under Advanced tab in options. If this is not enabled, GCF won't run.

Maybe just me, but that brought it all down to crawl.

I’m getting ready to agree with everyone that the web has changed a lot since IE8.

Yep. You're starting the feel the obsolescence pinch. With XP support being discontinued by Microsoft in 2014, IE8 is the last IE XP will ever see. And web developers have decided to dump IE8 and its...quirks...and move on. Its either get a newer 3rd party browser, or upgrade the OS.
