Google Chrome hogging data every morning

Hi there - I got an HTC One, running 4.3.
I've had an increase in data usage recently, and I think I've narrowed it down to Chrome being hoggy at 6am (ish), hogging around 10mb - 12mb every morning. Its certainly not "me" (foreground) using it, but my usage stats say it's foreground not background.
This week alone, it has scoffed 50mb in 4 days. There is no further usage throughout the day.
Any suggestions much appreciated.

Long shot... most visited sites (including recently closed sites)....and activity on other devices. These things can be accessed with buttons displayed at the button of new tab. Maybe one of these will give a clue of what kind of activity is going on
