google maps cache

Lurker
for a while now, google maps on android have allowed caching of map tiles which have previously been viewed, but is there any way to mass cache tiles (so you can save, then later on view an area without a data connection)

i know there are alternatives to gmaps which do allow the downloading of areas, but these apps often dont have built in navigation, but as i use google navigation quite a bit, this is essential

if not a way to download an area, would it be possible for someone to create an app which could take control of the google maps app and then automatically roam over a specified area, thus making google maps cache the area??

thanks for any replies

I'm not aware of a better way of doing what you want outside of making sure you have "Prefetch on mobile" checked inside your cache settings within Google Maps.
