Google Maps Dynamite Download

I was trying to download an offline area in google maps (preinstalled on marshmallow 6.0.1) for a vacation. 500 megabytes, around. The progress bar didn't move above 0 for a few minutes. I let it run for 30 without the progress bar moving at all. My phone was also becoming excruciatingly slow. Later, I noticed that my phone was quickly getting extremely hot. So hot, in fact, that I was worried it may catch on fire. I halted the download immediately and after a few minutes, the device cooled. After it did, I tried downloading again with the same results, except this time, the phone got hot much faster. I have a Nexus 6. I searched all over Google but not many posts have been made about Google maps offline, and none are about a phone getting very hot. I am planning to use my phone as a phone, NOT dynamite. Does anyone know the problem and a potential fix?

I never let my apps update, so what is on it, is the way it came...

MM verson 2 installed itself yesterday.
took quite a while for all of it to get done.
Verizon proclaimed it was just about security fixes and "better experience" whatever that means.

Give the free Mapfactor Navigator offline GPS navigation app a try.

I've tried an s-load of free offline GPS navigation apps, and this is the one I prefer.
