Google has done an incredible job with the Maps application.
The Navigation features in the latest updates to the application add a lot. Such as the navigation icon for your homescreen, which gives you direct access for navigating to contacts, favorites, recent searches, etc. without needing to open the Maps application.
The labs features also give the app quite a bit of extra, such as adding buttons to the main screen for "my location" & "layers" and adding "popular categories" to the search dialog for quick access to places near you.
As Google continues to update Maps, I'm sure we'll see constant improvements.
