google maps in offline mode

i would like to use google maps in offline mode, but it doesnt seem possible. can i download maps for my country, or just part of the country, so i can use google maps without internet connection?

When you plan a route Google Maps will download all the maps you need for that route. Once you're driving it Google Maps doesn't need to download any more maps or data. So if you have programmed your route while on WiFi you can put your phone in Airplane Mode – so it won't make any phone or internet connection – and Google Maps' or Nav's will still guide you along your entire programmed route as long as GPS is on.

Of course if your phone is in Airplane Mode you can't make or receive phone calls... And that's rarely why people have a phone...!

is it also possible to download a country map, not just some area? so that i dont have to check with wifi every time i want to go someplace

i checked it, but it doesnt seem to have this option:
-look up streets
-directions to travel from A to B

there are a lot of expensive sat nav apps out there that have offline maps. but one that is dead cheap (compared to others) and works so well is Navdroyd (about 4 euro). Once installed, just go to the manage maps section of the app and download any country in the world's map. just shows how much navigon and igo and the like rip people off with their rediculously high prices.

p.s. Navdroid is made by the same people that make Mapdroyd. Only Navdroyd is the navigation part of it. i think Mapdroyd is maps only.
