I don't use this function very often but i did use it the other day,the first time since it was beta i believe. It didn't have a clue which way was the best, shortest, fastest.
Is it just mine.Would it be any better if i uninstalled and reinstalled the app.Any other tips to make it usable.
Luckily i googled where i wanted to go before trying it out or would have been lost

i use it often, and apart from losing mobile data because im driving through a remote part of the uk with not much signal, i dont have a problem.

When it route plans, does it not show you an alterenative route like this in grey? if it does, tap the grey route, and it'll then show you that route instead.

The alternate routes thing is important to have. I use it often in a fairly complex metroplex and it's never directed me poorly.

Do you have any specific complaints about the way it is routing you? Maybe we can use that information to help.

I've used it quite a few times now and I think it's excellent. I haven't seen the 'alternative route' come up yet (is it something you have to do in Settings?), but when we have deviated from the suggested route (intentionally for various reasons) it almost instantly recognises the fact and readjusts the route.

Who needs a sat-nav? !

In the US, it seems to default to the fastest route for current traffic conditions. I have noticed a few instances where prior knowledge helped find a more optimal route than even the alternatives, but nothing like that has happened in quite some time.

I had it give me a route through back roads the other day but I missed all the traffic I would have hit on the main roads. :-)

I just undid all updates and tried it again. It already had the optomised setting for my location. As soon as it went to navigate it started me from somewhere up the road i'm not so it's not that good at finding me in the first place lol. When i go out later i'll put in the same address it couldn't find the other day and see if it's any better

Apologies if I'm being stupid, but have you enabled GPS?

I'm guessing the alternate routes are there, just that they aren't very noticeable. The alternate routes show up on the map in gray, when it initially shows the route, before starting navigation, and the gray lines can blend to seem just a normal part of the map.

If you look for them, my guess is you will see them. If you then press on one of the gray lines, you should get a screen offering a choice between routes -- including distance, normal time it would take to destination, and estimated time based on current traffic conditions.

Thanks. I'll look out for that.

Just today, I used navigation after leaving a store, but it started me a few miles away at a location I was at earlier. It didn't seem to update my position until I moved forward a couple feet, so I assumed it was using a location stored in memory for Google Now or something else. I can see how that can be frustrating though.

As for alternative routes, it does select routes based on current traffic conditions, but I don't know if that's something that needs the right configuration. If you have trouble seeing the alternative routes on the map, swipe left/right on the bottom of the screen where it shows the route overview (tap the X first if you are already navigating on a specific route, tap resume before that if you were browsing the map while on a specific route)

Yes GPS is enabled.
It started me from a position i hadn't to in months.
The old version seems to be working fine.I just have to remember not to update the app when prompted as i have a tendancy to just hit update all.
