Google Maps traffic layer quirk

Okay, I have checked the relevant topics and this problem has been on the books for quite a while and nobody posted any problems for the past 3 months or more and I am using Android version of google maps for less than 3 months. I have had at least 3 updates, most recent of which was last week.

My problem is, the traffic layer is disappearing from the map quasi randomly. I have read, there might be missing 3G (or more) coverage but this did not hold water with me. I live in Southern California and my commute is between San Diego and Ontario/Fontana area. When I am leaving San Diego, say around 3:30PM, just before I hit I-15 north, I turn on my google maps with traffic layer visible. In about 45 minutes to an hour long period of time, I lose the traffic layer. Depending on traffic heaviness, during this time I could be anywhere between Falbrook/Pala area and Temecula/Menefee area (for those of you who know the area, can tell that, the stretch I am talking about, is 20 miles or so long). So, if it was 3G coverage disappearing for some reason, it should happen pretty much at about the same spot every day. This is not my experience.

I am wondering if this is a bug with google maps or is it some sort of "feature" to turn of the traffic layer for some reason (licensing limitations maybe??) after a certain period of time. I used to work at El Segundo and did the 105/605/10 stretch every day, with quite ungodly commute times, and disappearing traffic layer was never the case, alas, I was using the blackberry version of maps then. And this was 4+ months ago the latest.

Anyone have any sensible explanation to this phenomena, other than "the gremlins" ?

Thank you
