Help Google Maps - turn off calling screen

Not sure how to phrase this question really, so bear with me!

On Google Maps, when I have it in navigation mode and a call comes through, it changes the screen to show who is calling. If the call then takes more time than my screen timeout length, when the call is finished it doesn't automatically go back to the maps/navigation screen.

This is frustrating when driving as it means I have to reach over, and unlock my phone, then press the square button to view recent apps to get back to navigating. Something I don't really want to do while driving.

Is there a way to not have the screen switch from Maps to the phone call when I make/receive a call? My phone is connected to my car via the car's Bluetooth system (Ford Sync Gen2, non touch screen, non-Android Auto compatible) and I don't tend to use the phone version of Android Auto as I just don't like it, but if that might fix this issue then I'll consider it.

Thanks

I usually switch back to maps while in the phonecall. Not a great solution, but gets past the screen timeout problem.:(

I'd be curious if someone has a better way.

I've tried that as well, but it still means taking your eyes off the road, and leaning over to touch the phone while driving. The British Police forces are currently on a huge clamp down on the use of "handheld electronic devices" while driving - even while sitting in traffic or at lights you run the risk of a fine and points on your licence for touching a phone while the engine is running and you're in the drivers seat. I'd just rather not have to do anything on my phone with my hands while behind the wheel and this behaving this way seems like a pretty big oversight to me.

I suppose the other option that could work is screen pinning? I don't know if that would limit any functionality of the phone though
