Google Maps [UPDATED] on S3

Sorry if this isn't the right place for this. Just got my S3 today, verified Google Maps is up-to-date, but I have no Offline Mode option under Settings to saving maps. Is this normal or am I just being ******ed? I didn't any simillar threads on the interwebs about this issue.

It works perfectly fine on mine, are you sure yours is up-to-date? Just go on Play Store and have a look. TO download maps, open Google Maps and click on Settings capacitive button, and select "Make Available Offline".

sorry, this is my first Android phone and it shows. I had gone to My Apps, then All Apps in the Play Store and when I clicked on Maps, it didnt give me the Update option, so I thought I was up to date. I then manually searched for Maps and saw there was an update available.

Sorry guys for wasting your time

you didn't waste all of our time. I didn't know that it could do that so I actually found the thread helpful.

I haven't experimented with this yet so my question is this... If I zoom out to my whole county and select "make available offline", what actually gets downloaded? Just that screen? Could I zoom in? Is it just the layer you are viewing? Questions questions questions...

UPDATE: OK, so I tried it, I see you can zoom to the area you want and it gives you estimated size and you can save a total of 100MB... cool

Might try my previous thread link as a start....

For example here is a snippet:

It's a cool feature, but there are a number of caveats - offline voice-guided navigation is not possible even in the precached map part, and the phone will just show you the directions. When you hit about 100MB or so of precached area, the app will warn you that's all you can download, but you can save up to six such areas, and 100MB are enough to cover a fairly large city to the street level, for example.
