Google maps

Hello all I have just picked up an HTC desire running on the android 2.3 gingerbread.
I have been busy installing apps but for some strange reason when I click for Google maps they will not download
The download symbol appears for a matter of seconds then disappeared.
Help what can I do?

Maybe see if there is an update for it in the market.
