Google Maps

Ive got google maps on my android phone. But it need wi-fi connections.
Can't I use is in a diffrent way?

Please help?

Maybe Mobile Data, in the settings, is off. So that GMaps defaults to downloading data via WiFi (and notifies you that it needs a WiFi connection if it doesn't currently have one).

Downloading data via mobile (2G, 3G, or EDMA, I think it's called), i.o.w. via the phone connection, is very convenient, but also eats into your dataplan. And don't be fooled by your carrier's "unlimited data plan", because there is no such thing. Carriers log every byte you up- or download, and your data use is subject to a "fair use policy". I.o.w. a cap on mobile data use. Exceed that and it can get very expensive. That's why it's wise to not do any gaming or watching streaming videos or sports games on mobile data connections. Because those are the major data traffic generators.

Use the free "Y5" app, in the market, to automatically re-connect to WiFi hotspots that you were connected to before.

If you mean "data" instead of "WiFi", no. If you want a nav app that doesn't use data then you'll need to find something else.

However, if Google Maps doesn't work with data from your carrier that's something else. It should work.

Could you clarify?

What do u want me to say?

Decribe the problem you're having. Did you recieve an error message saying "you need wifi connection" when you tried to open google maps? Or did you discover that google maps only worked when wifi is turned on? Giving us more detail on what exactly happened will help us diagnose your issue.

On a side note: Google maps will need some sort of data connection to operate. Whether it is through wifi or carrier's data plan (3g). The maps are downloaded as you go. So without a data connection you won't have any maps.

Forgive me for saying this Hammaad87... but getting information from you is a little like pulling teeth.

There are a number of reasons that you could be receiving this message. Not least of which could be connected to your last post.

Could you give the following information about your handset:-

Make

Model

Android firmware version

Are you able to send & receive MMS (picture messages) using 3G (not WiFi)?

Are you able to browse the web using 3G (not WiFi)?

Going over this topic is like trying to decipher a tough puzzle (what was again the question?)...

Google Maps can be used only if you have a data connectivity (at least initially, to cache the maps). This can be done in 2 ways - either via WiFi or via the mobile data from your carrier (3G, etc).

I think i know what the OP is trying to say... When you fire up the Maps App a message pops-up:"Not all location sources are currently enabled. For the fastest and most accurate location detection:

1. Turn on GPS and wireless networks in location settings
2. Turn on Wi-fi

All you need to do is click settings to turn on your GPS. (or if its already on just click Skip) You don't need to be on Wi-fi like stated by the previous posters.

Could it be that as the OP has an Orange handset, on an O2 sim, that they have not got the correct APN settings for data in the first place which may be causing the problem?

To quote Usta in another post...

"The ball is now in OP's court... :)"

Ive put in a orange sim but i wanna use it mainly for gps. On my san francisco under the wireless and networks settings i have:

Airplane Mode
WIFI
Bluetooth
Bluetooth settings
VPN settings
Mobile networks

which one do i go on?
