Google Messenger Icon Not Clearing Count

Within the past week or so, the Google Messenger icon changed, adding a number, presumably of unread messages, on the icon. It's a nice addition, however, mine doesn't seem to ever reset, stuck at four. Does the scope of Messenger go beyond MMS & Text messages?

Anyone else experiencing this and/or know of a fix?
