Google Messenger sending texts to wrong person

I've used Google Messenger for SMS since I got my Note 4 in 2014. About a month ago it began a strange behavior. I will go to compose a text, input & select the persons name, type message and send. As soon as I hit send, the contact I selected visually changes to someone else in my contact list. It turns out the message has only been sent to the contact that Messenger randomly chose and not the original person I intended. This doesn't happen for every text, but does occur about 30% of the time anytime I start a new conversation thread. There seems to be no rhyme or reason for who it switches to and can happen with any contact I initiate the message to. Even sometimes selecting people I've never texted before. The issue seems to be within Messenger itself as I've switched back to the stock Samsung Messages for a few days and haven't had the issue once. Today I started trying Messenger again and what do you know, its happening again. I've cleared data, uninstalled/reinstalled but the only thing that seems to help is clearing all message threads and starting from scratch. If I leave those conversations there I can continue to text and there is no mixup. So I suppose thats my solution for now because I'm not a fan of the stock Samsung app.

This just started happening to me as well. what @KOLIO suggested does work, but incoming messages get associated with the wrong thread. I'm on N-DP3 on a N6. Anyone else?

Might be a bug from a recent update.
Perhaps you can try an older version, see if the problem goes away:

This site is known to be safe.I say that because you'll be prompted to allow "unknown sources" if you choose to do so.
No spam or malware embedded or,pirated apps, just a safe place to retrieve previous editions of apps.
I myself have been using the site for a couple years now, never any problems whatsoever. :thumbsupdroid:

Sounds reasonable. Trying to install several old versions now, will report back. It looks like Google just updated the app on the 25th, so it's very possibly the problem...

Well, looks like I can't rollback the app to an older version because of the dev preview. I'll live with it for now.
Silly question, perhaps (I've only had one Nexus device):
If the Messenger app is pre-installed on the dev preview,do you have the option to uninstall updates to the Messenger app?

Good question (because I tried it as a first resort).
Nope, it hasn't actually upgraded since the newest dev preview installed.

So, here we are a few days later... Yesterday I received the Android 6.0.1 Verizon OTA update, and now the issue has seemingly been solved. Not sure if it was a Samsung issue now or not, but it seems that way. Thanks!

very important question for me on your OTA update to Marshmallow.

did you need to do a FDR? did all of your Homescreens stay the way they were?
