Google Play Music users BEWARE

So, a couple of months ago, I started using google play music instead of poweramp. I purchased a few songs and added them to my existing library. In order to have them available offline, I set them to download to my device. I noticed quit often, the songs would download over and over again. The keeping requested music bar would occasionally get to 100% but was constantly bouncing back down and downloading.

So then, about a month ago I got a warning from my ISP about excessive use. There had been over 1.1 TERABYTES downloaded on my network in 1 MONTH! Let that sink in... 1.1 TERABYTES!!!

My wife watches a lot of youtube make up and glamour videos and netflix so we just chalked it up to that. I adjusted her quality settings thinking that would resolve the issue. She also agreed to cut back drastically. I thought all was well and moved on. So then, a couple of nights ago I got the notice AGAIN. Now my BS meter is going off. So, I converted my router to dd-wrt so I could dump netflow to a collector to see exactly what was going on (Im a network engineer). I was having difficulty finding the netflow options for this version of DD-WRT so I decided to just do a live test using the traffic monitor.

I connected my phone to the wifi and the traffic IMMEDIATELY spiked. I saw the keeping requested music bar and I watched and waited. I was running constantly at about 16Mbps (2MBps). Once the bar hit 100% indicating all my songs were saved the traffic continued to flow at the same blistering rate. I then went into google play and found that two songs were stuck. Even though it indicated it was done, these two songs were still in fact trying to download NON STOP. I unpinned them and the traffic immediately dropped off.

That means, for the past couple of months ANYTIME i was home my phone would be downloading at this rate NON STOP.

I highly recommend NOBODY use Google Play music. The app sucks anyway. If my ISP charged me overages you can imagine what THAT bill would look like!!

I googled and found nobody else ever reporting this type of situation so I figured I better get the word out! BEWARE!! TELL YOUR FRIENDS!

I've NEVER heard of this or experienced it before, though I don't doubt your story, so I'd be wary of telling everyone to stop using it immediately. That being said, the app isn't great, but the music's well priced.

After searching, I've only found 2-3 other references to this happening. So... My guess, something's wrong with your app or device. What device?

I'd suggest using music manager if your going to download the purchased tracks. Its going to download the MP3s and you can put them on the SD card or internal memory

What kind of phone you got . I use Google play never have or seen of this . I do get the to many devices messages . cause i play on many devices . but u may want to check the settings of the music play store . if you Dont set up it will keep many songs at a constant download . many of the old songs do that . but I was told from Google and many guys at my job Dont pin them to the device cause it will chew up your device memory. Just think they are pin so the apps come first then Google music and what ever else you have . let Google keep it stored for you cause you did pay for it so they just keep it so you can play it :D

And if you MUST pin it, download it to your PC via the Music Manager or web interface, and just good-old-fashioned sync it :p

IME, this is the way to go with Play Music! Also, you get to enjoy your music using your primo music player PowerAmp! :D

Yeah, I suppose it could have been an issue with my device but its still something people should be aware of. The device was a 2.5 year old Droid RAZR which has been replaced by a G2 now.

Anyway, I plan to still use google music to purchase songs but I will be downloading them to my device manually and playing them with poweramp.

Yeah, it is definitely worth keeping an eye out for.
