Help Google play services has hijacked my phone

Doug W K

Lurker
I am absolutely furious.

I am running a Blackberry Priv, which comes installed with android, but today google play services decided to not allow me to log in and has sabotaged a hand full of apps.

I have to update the service to login and I can't log in without updating
on boot up google play services opens 19 different windows demanding to be updated but wont allow me to do it. ****ing android! What a piece of shit.

All of this while google play is relentlesly consuming my data sending information to god knows where.

Thanks Rob for you message. How do you think it would be possible to download the ap if i can't open google play?

So is android taking a page out of apples play book and deliberately sabotaging there own devices to extort money from its users?

I do feel bad for ya, but you really can't expect anything consistent (except problems) from Blackberry, even if it runs Android.. I think your phone is probably more of an experiment right now than a product of a legitimate/longtime Android mfgr anymore. Don't blame Android, blame Blackberry instead. Blackberries & iPhones are the last thing I'd ever buy to try & expect to properly run an Android OS, Lol.

You mean if they had never used android they'd have a decent product.

Android has changed their log in requirements to crack down on unlicensed users, completely forgetting in the process that these phones were licensed and delivered with their product. Locking me out of my product to force me to buy a new device. that's extortion.

Try one of their Blackberry OS devices instead?

Can't really comment about Blackberry much myself, as the last one I used was in 2005. And FWIW the Storm was the last Blackberry I actually saw, in 2010....we weren't impressed...

It would seem reasonable to blame the Android OS if this was something other people experience (though even then I would strictly be a Google Play Services problem, as Android can exist without Google apps). But I've never seen this reported before.

The real question is what happened here? Did you do anything in the day or so before this started? Because Google Play Services is something that generally updates itself in the background. It might be that they pushed an update that doesn't work with the Priv (in which case all Priv owners will get this), or it could be something specific to your device, something in your data, that is causing problems. Or it could be something the blackberry apps have done (since I see one of them has been integrated with play services, and don't know how blackberry handle things).

There's not much you can do with Play Services, but you could try clearing its cache. Clearing its data can cause problems with the sync of a couple of apps (like GMail) for a few days, so I'd keep that as a last resort, but the cache should be harmless.

I certainly can attest to that, and I know a lot of people that use Android without Google. :thumbsupdroid:

...and Blackberry gave up a long time ago.

Except that Android is open source. There is no license needed to use Android. And Play Services, and Google Apps are totally separate from Android. Android is working properly on your device, it's the Google apps that aren't, due to some modification Blackberry did on Android. If this was an Android problem it would be a widespread thing happening across all manufacturers.

I don't think this is a common device for Android, not surprising considering the troubled history of Blackberry.
Apart from the above advice, which is all good, you may want to consult the Blackberry forums for more advice, as I don't even think there's a dedicated forum for it here.
In any case, this isn't a problem with Android in general, as these problems will be related to the Blackberry customisations of the O/S.

Exactly. I was thinking there may have been a missing semicolon, indent, META-INF, whatever typo that could be conflicting somewhere.. @ OP, Definitely not an 'Android' problem unless it crosses more devices/mfgrs/Carriers than just your phone. Oh, using certain apps can break the play store as well.. Did'ja possibly DL a new app or modify, Root the device recently?

The article does say who and why the change

BB had problems with its secure mail service when some 3letter agency couldn't backdoor in. Made a fuss and BB accomodated if I remember right.

The phone was built for business use and security, but to sell the phone BB had to change. It went to Android.

I had a Pearl Flip. Loved the organization on the phone.

I wish that Nokia had been able to keep Symbian going.

Nokia got trojaned badly by Elop, sadly. MeeGo had so much potential.
