Google Reader memory usage

I'm using Google's Reader app and I noticed that its keeping 28 meg of data in addition to the almost 3 meg for the app itself. When I clear the data, the app acts like its being launched for the first time.

Is there a way to get the app to auto-delete all the data, which I assume is read articles, or do I have to keep on doing this manually?

Any help would be much appreciated,

There's an option: "Synchronize Feeds" under More/Settings. Do you have it enabled or disabled? Because over here it uses about 352KB for lots of feeds that include images.
