google talk sign in issue ("Talk" app)

Hi all,
I have a small yet big problem with the Talk app.
I cannot sign in.
It says : could not connect to server, will retry shortly.
Thus, (I gather) I cannot download apps from the market either.
My wifi works fine (other apps connect without problem, even gmail).
I have tried shutting down the phone and taking the battery out for 15 mins.
I also have tried to delete all data and cash of the Talk app.
No results.
Can anyone help me ?
btw, is there a "setting" accessible in Talk (In my case: i.e. the app doesn't open), so that I can change my login and password? I had thought signing in with a different account and then coming back would help, but I can't do it.

GMail is an account authenticator for the same subsystem, so you should be able to set up the account from there... however "can not connect" seems more like a general issue. Are you by any chance on a rooted phone?

Do you have a gmail account? If not you have to have one before you can use Talk as it is a gmail specific app.

I have found using the WiFi at the library that I cannot sign into Google Talk. Are you using public WiFi or is there a setting there you can change?

Google Talk signs in ok at other WiFi, except at the library. So I think it has something to do with that.
