Google Voice and SMS

Any suggestions on making this more instant? I really want to ditch my SMS plan, but the GV notification is spotty at best.

I thought SMS was push now? As in, you get an SMS/VM/ETC, Google Pushes a notice to your phone to sync, then your phone syncs?

It seems like it's still just checking every 10 minutes or whatever. I also have the extension in Chrome that shows your SMSs, and the two don't correctly correspond on new messages.

Anyone use GV as their sole SMS?
 
I've been using GV for just shy of a month now, exclusively, and have only had one delayed message (that I know of). It was the end-ish of last week (don't recall the exact day) but it was the same day Google acknowledged a problem with GMail. I also had issues with GTalk that day, it would sign me in and then go down. Other than that I've noticed no problems with GV.
I'm going to, in a few days, cancel my and my son's messaging plans. Between the two Android phones I'm paying $180/year for texting...texting that we can do for free with GV. I'd much rather do free perhaps sometimes glitchy texting than pay Verizon that much!
I also figure/hope that if anything is really important a call will be made, not a text sent. A delay in a text is not worrisome to me really.
 
Yea, I don't see texting as vital information (well, it shouldn't be). But I like to get them promptly as people expect you to.

I'll keep playing with it. But it seems spoty still.
 
If it really does become an issue for me I'll add texting back, but so far so good.
My only annoyance with GV is the app itself, it "double hitches" in the inbox when I back out of it. It's sort of like it's opened twice. Hopefully, somewhere down the road, Google will update that (and send invites out!). I'm not holding my breath though ;)
 
I use GV for SMS on my rooted & custom ROMmed Droid and receive notification extremely quickly every since GV enabled sync.

On the other hand, my wife's completely stock Droid has had up to a 12 hour delay in receiving GV SMS. I've done everything short of a factory reset on her phone to fix this and nothing has helped. Factory reset is next.
