Google voice app details??

Two questions about google voice app.

1) When Google voice is installed on phone and one uses google voice to place a call, are the cell phone plan minutes being used?

2) Is cell phone signal strength relevant to placing a call using Google voice? I am under the impression that google voice does not rely on signal strength but instead on the internet connection.

My house does not have good cell phone signal.. can i use google voice on my phone with wifi turned on? and am I actually burning my cell phone minutes while using google voice?
 
1. Yes, by default your cell phone minutes are being used. By itself Google Voice is not VOIP. Other people have gotten Google Voice to work with their VOIP numbers. I don't use VOIP, so I can't give you any more info on that.

2. When I place a call with Google Voice on my phone, what it does is use data to get the phone number to call, then my phone dials a "regular" phone number (it is a 615 area code number, if I remember right). So if your cell signal is weak and you have trouble with your "normal" calls, the same will apply to Google Voice calls.

If you choose to use google voice to place the call it goes through your data, not your voice plan. I have google voice setup on my Behold 2 that has no sim card in it and is not under a t-mobile plan, I can still send and receive calls and sms from google voice over my wifi.

Are you sure about the call part? Google Voice SMS is sent over data, but voice calls do not use data.

is google voice a form of voip? so if i used used it on my droid to make calls would it use my minutes - Google Voice Help
 
I have unlimited data plan. So as long as I am using data and not minutes I should be okay?
I have terrible signal in the house so it would be nice to use google voice and not have my calls drop.

If Google Voice used data for voice calls, then yes, you would be okay. However, it does not. See the link I posted earlier:

Try it out and see for yourself if it uses data or your voice minutes.
 
i'll have to check it tomorrow but there is no sim in it, no service with T-Mobile for months. it may be because I have my gizmo5 account setup with it, I know I also have fring and sipdroid on it, not sure if that would matter.

My anytime minutes are used when I make cell calls with GV but I'm not charged anytime minutes for anyone that calls me from a cell phone.

Gizmo5 is VOIP, so that is likely why you are able to make calls using data. You are using a VOIP program, not Google Voice by itself.

Incidentally, Google bought Gizmo5 a while back. So, at some point in the future, Google will likely release a true VOIP solution using Google Voice (and what remains of Gizmo5). No idea on when that will happen, but I'm looking forward to it.

I'm assuming you have Google Voice set to show the incoming caller's number, not your Google Voice number, right? In that case you are using any mobile anytime minutes (which are unlimited).
