Google Voice Phone # Decision (Carrier vs New)

I noticed that when I went to change my google voice number to something I could more easily remember, it asked if I wanted to make my google voice number my Verizon phone number.

What are thee benefits of using a different number vs your carriers number?

What did you guys do and why?
