Google Voice with No Service

Hi guys,

I had a Google Voice number and moved away to Hong Kong which meant I cancelled my cell plan. Through my Galaxy S3, I used to use Talkatone to send/receive calls from home.

Clearly, they ended 3rd party support back in May, but unlike iOS, I can't make/receive calls through Hangouts. Google Voice requires me to "register" that device's phone number, but of course I can't with an HK phone number.

Any ways to use Google voice on my Android device without service?

Thanks,
Justin

Hi nitsujri, and welcome to Android Forums :)

As you know, Google shut down the XMPP service that was being used for a lot of VoIP magic in conjunction with Google Voice, but XMPP fortunately isn't the only game in town. I don't know for sure about Talkatone, but I do know that GrooveIP partnered with VoIP provider ring.to to be able to still provide VoIP calls with GV integration. You may want to give that a try.

Alternatively, you could use pretty much any other VoIP provider, just as long as you add your VoIP number to the forwarding settings at https://www.google.com/voice#phones

Hope this helps. :)

I have had to do this before as well. I did exactly what codesplice suggested, went with GrooveIP and it works pretty well for what I needed it to do.
