Google Voice

With Google Voice, can you chose a specific number? I want to replace the amount I pay per month so I'm trying to find an app that will allow me to text, but with the phone number registered to my android. I know TextFree lets you text, but it creates a new phone number.
Does anyone know what will allow me to achieve this task?

unfortunately, google voice requires you to set up a different phone number, it just lets you forward that number to your android number so calls and texts come in on your phone. there are some area codes that google voice does not even have.
